KYOTO

Kyoto is a very special city to visit. It’s so rich in history and culture and it’s almost difficult toΒ not come across a temple or shrine. There are both shinto and buddhist structures, the most famous that you might know is the Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion) and Fushimi Inari Taisha, famous for its hundreds of red tori gates. Kyoto is an excellent place to stay not only for its various attractions but also for it’s proximity to other beautiful cities such as Osaka and Nara. One of the most beautiful places to walk through is Higashiyama and around the temple back streets that stretch from Yasaka Shrine to Kiyomizudera. Along the way you’ll see inviting shops selling Kyoto crafts and sweets, and vendors selling dried fruit and even bbq crab meat sticks. Kinkakuji (the Golden Pavilion) which is famous for its gold leaf exterior is the biggest tourist spot in Kyoto. Ginkakuji (the Silver Pavilion) which is not as famous (no this one is not covered in silver) as Kinkakuji is still worth a visit, it …

TOKYO

Tokyo is probably the city most people are familiar with in Japan. It’s crazy and overwhelming. Tokyo is a city of lights, energy and food. If there’s something you’re looking for, you’ll find it. Cat cafes, skyscrapers, robot restaurants and endless floors of shopping, Tokyo literally has it all. Something very special about Japan is their train stations and department stores. You’ll find two basement floors under the station dedicated to produce and cafes. Vendors sell expensive fruit, fresh seafood, traditional Japanese sweets, chocolates, cakes, fried food on sticks, dumplings, grilled chicken, the list is endless. It’s here you’ll find stalls by Godiva, Wittamer and Dean & Deluca. Every item purchased is carefully wrapped, put in a box with a little ice pack and given to you in a beautiful bag. If you go up you’ll find floors of shopping and if you go to the top two floors, you’ll be especially delighted to see these floors filled by restaurants. Hawaiian burgers, American biscuits and gravy, Italian, Thai, Korean and of course Japanese food. It’s …

Vacation 2/3: Cologne, Germany

Part two of my vacation, Cologne, Germany! Woo! I had the most amazing time in Cologne. I tried to take in as much of the city as possible, which was pretty difficult because I was there for a 3 day metal festival, Euroblast. The festival went from 1pm to 11:30pm and had after shows too. So basically we (my boyfriend and I) woke up at 9am and went exploring in the city until 12pm, would go back to our hotel and freshen up, then to the music festival until midnight. So, so exhausting, but it was the best experience of my life! I met up with a friend from Sweden and made a new German friend too. I never realised how much I needed German food in my life until I went to Cologne. There was this bakery chain in the city that had streusel EVERYTHING! Blueberry, apple, streusel cheesecake bars ANDΒ it also had jam Berliner doughnuts (jelly-filled doughnuts), 2 for $1. Just..oh my god. The food was sooo cheap and so delicious! We had …
